Virtual Clinic Clown helps kids and seniors laugh again

Did anyone know that on average a child laughs 400 times a day. And an adult only 40 more times. A child in the clinic only laughs 10 times a day or even less. A Munich startup wants to change that. From now on there is the virtual clinic clown FrédARico, who is always there to help little patients get well, seven days a week, 24 hours a day.

Clowns trigger happiness hormones. The Munich startup SO GEH WOW has analyzed, cataloged and digitized over 1000 key experiences that have been making people laugh for centuries. “These have been distilled into fun, beneficial clown experiences. For this we have worked together with the best clowns in the world, for example Clown Fumagalli or Clown Chistirrin”, says FrédARico inventor Markus Strobl. He has worked in management for the largest circus companies (Circus Krone and Circus Roncalli). Real clinic clowns might come once a week or just once a month. The virtual clinic clown FrédARico, on the other hand, can be there at any time to banish grief and make sick children laugh. This is made possible by the technology of augmented reality. The clown is virtually brought to life on a tablet or smartphone simply by scanning a page of a book. 3D glasses are not necessary, just a smartphone or tablet, an internet connection and a FrédARico book.

The AR experience images in the book were designed by the original painters of Benjamin Blümchen (the talking elephant). Thanks to the 3D animations that are always available, the little ones in the hospital can access the virtual clinic clown at any time and laugh with the clown. Professor Doctor Karl-Walter Jauch (LMU Klinikum Munich) judges: “FrédARico is an enormous relief. He’s perfectly made.” Also Professor Doctor Markus M. Lerch (Head of LMU Klinikum Munich) is enthusiastic: “FrédARico is a very special invention”. And now the good news: FrédARico can also be used for seniors. “FrédARico succeeds in finding an emotional connection to people with dementia in a special way through his virtual body language and his playful approaches. He promotes humorous scenic contacts and vitalizing interactions even with people who are lost in themselves due to dementia.

With the key experiences of “making laughter” analyzed by us, we give people positive impulses,” says inventor and SO GEHT WOW founder Markus Strobl.

The virtual clinic clown is currently in use in 30 clinics and facilities in Germany, England and the Ukraine. In the first 3 months, the AR-Fredarico experiences were called up more than 250,000 times.

There are already many prominent ambassadors supporting the project: FC Bayern legend Giovane Elber, Hollywood actor Ben Becker (The Comedian Harmonists), hip-hop star Michi Beck (Fantastischen Vier), comedian Annette Frier and TV host Melissa Khalaj (The Voice of Germany).
